Finding somewhere to stay in Gibraltar

If you’ve been perusing the Visit Gibraltar ( website, finding out about the many things to do and see, then you probably won’t need much more convincing to choose the British Overseas Territory for your next holiday. Whether it’s shopping on Main Street that has attracted you or the chance to get up close and personal with the local Barbary macaque monkeys, you’ll never be bored here… but you’ll still need somewhere good to stay. Thankfully, we can advise you on the best Gibraltar accommodation.

Ultimately, there are three main categories of accommodation in Gibraltar – hotels, self catering units and youth hostels. As far as the latter is concerned, the Emile Youth Hostel is worth investigating, while self catering units in the territory range from Both Worlds Retirement Rental and Bray Properties Holiday Rental to Jade Travel Apartments and Majestic Ocean Plaza. All of the relevant contact details can be seen on our website, but bear in mind that these featured self catering accommodation properties are not subject to grading by the Gibraltar Tourist Board/AA. We therefore can’t comment on the standard of accommodation and service offered by them.

For those embarking on a Gibraltar holiday who do want that assurance, however, there are various fine hotels to choose from in the territory, which are subject to the Hotel Grading Scheme of the Gibraltar Tourist Board, managed in partnership with the UK’s Automobile Association (AA). The Scheme sees the use of a star classification system – from one star to five stars – for hotels, while Rosettes are also awarded from one to five by the AA, in recognition of the quality of the food served by the hotels’ restaurants.

A Common Standards rating has been established for the UK’s hotel properties, as a result of work by the AA in addition to Visit Britain, Visit Scotland and the Wales Tourist Board. It is these common standards that are also used in the Gibraltar scheme, which should be a source of reassurance and familiarity for many – especially Britons – taking their holidays in Gibraltar. Participating properties in the Gibraltar scheme are subject to annual AA inspections, while the scheme is also of a voluntary nature – which should only further signal to you the extent of these hotels’ commitment to the highest standard of accommodation and service.

Whether you spend your days in Gibraltar investigating the Great Siege Tunnels, St Michael’s Cave or the Moorish Castle, or for that matter revel in the finest local cuisine or just take in the astonishing views from the top of the Upper Rock, you’ll want to know that you have chosen somewhere truly brilliant to stay. You can take a look at the Visit Gibraltar ( website right now for a list of the best Gibraltar hotels, including the four star Caleta Hotel with its spectacular views to Spain and North Africa, the Queen’s Hotel situated just outside the historic City Walls of Gibraltar, the unfussy and conveniently located Cannon Hotel and many more.
