The Gibraltar Exhibitions of Modern Art Gallery, GEMA, is a unique gallery space, located in Montagu Bastion, Line Wall Road. Prior to its conversion as an art gallery the historical site had been used as a store for many years. Now it aims to celebrate the work of Gibraltarian artists and showcase artworks of the Gibraltar Government’s Collection.
The Bastion’s original stone walls create a distinctive backdrop for the collection of art, which includes paintings, sculptures, video, installation, and photography.
The Gallery’s first vault is dedicated to Gibraltarian artist Christian Hook. Christian was named Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2014 and has since seen plenty of success and acclaim. GEMA is privileged to be able to exhibit some of Christian’s earlier work which forms part of the Government’s collection, as well as some of his more recent prints. The Exhibition at GEMA also includes prior winners of the annual competitions organised by GCS on behalf of the Ministry of Culture in Gibraltar as well as The Kishin Alwani Foundation Collection.
This venue also serves as a cultural hub and has played host to many functions and events, to include fashion and dance workshops, a live music programme, a yoga event and for the first time in October 2019, a five-act play.
Gibraltar Cultural Services continuously works to promote the artworks on display at the gallery with tours for school children and other activities. Interactive material for children and young people is available to make their visit more enjoyable. GEMA is accessible and inclusive, and entrance is free.
